Burnie Brae Community Garden

Community gardens are wonderful places to meet people and participate in both gardening and social activities in your local area. My local community garden is the Burnie Brae Community Garden at Kuran Street, Chermside. I attend the Friday afternoon session with a small group of fellow volunteers who regularly tend to the gardens. This is a great opportunity to learn about sustainable gardening and food production in backyards. Feel free to visit us in the gardens and participate in the communities activities in the garden. Keep an eye on the developments of this site through visiting the Burnie Brae Website and News & Events.

Nashville State School, Brighton

Nashville State Primary School call their permaculture garden the "GARDEN OF PROMISE"   The school runs a successful gardening program with the kids that has each class out in the gardens during the week where they learn gardening skills as well as nutritional information. I have been working with the school to help develop the permaculture gardens. The gardens are producing vegetables and salad greens that are used in the tuckshop.

I have helped the school develop their garden areas and have been volunteering in the garden with the teachers and children and other volunteers. The link below is a podcast from 612 ABC Brisbane where some staff members are interviewed about their 'garden of promise'.

The Brisbane City Council Composting Workshop was a great success. We had a group of interested gardeners along to the Burnie Brae Community Gardens on the 12 June, 2010 to learn composting do's and don'ts.
